Civil engineering   is a   professional engineering   discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings.

Civil engineering is arguably the oldest engineering discipline. It deals with the built environment and can be dated to the first time someone placed a roof over his or her head or laid a tree trunk across a river to make it easier to get across.


Scope for Civil Engineers after Graduation?
They can be found in the aerospace industry, designing jetliners and space stations; in the automotive industry, perfecting the load-carrying capacity of a chassis and improving the crashworthiness of bumpers and doors; and they can be found in the ship building industry, the power industry, and many other industries wherever constructed facilities are involved. And they plan and oversee the construction of these facilities as construction managers.

Civil engineers design and supervise the construction of municipal projects from sewage systems to apartment complexes. Using their knowledge of mathematics, science and materials, civil engineers ensure that their work meets state and federal guidelines, remains on schedule and comes in at or below budget.


Salary Outlook:
The BLS notes that median annual salary for civil engineers was $80,770 as of May 2013. The mean annual salary for civil engineers was $85,640 in the same year. Civil engineers in the oil and gas extraction industry earned the highest annual average salary in this field, with an average salary of $118,790.
